Beauty is more than what meets the eye. It has always been so! Chelsea Werner is just one of those people who reminds us of the same. She was born with Down Syndrome but has not let her condition take over herself and her spirit. She joined gymnastics as a kid because she wanted to have good muscle tone. Kids with Down Syndrome generally have weak muscle strength so her parents decided to get her into gymnastics so that she could fight this particular weakness.
A champion gymnast with Down Syndrome
Chelsea put her best foot forward, quite literally and emerged as an extremely skilled and graceful gymnast after years of hard practice and dedication. After having made a name for herself in the world of gymnastics, she is now set to enter the world of modelling. Her aim is to find a place for herself in that world so that she can work for the representation of people with Down Syndrome.
She has recently signed a deal with We Speak, an inclusive label that also aims to broaden the horizons of representation. The journey for Chelsea has always been a tough one. She has had all her applications, before the one she sent to We Speak, rejected because no one wanted to work with a patient who had Down Syndrome. These other companies did not promote inclusivity in any way. However, her parents Lisa and Ray Werner made sure that she keep trying and soon she was discovered by We Speak.
We Speak saw Chelsea blossom into an amazing model.
Briauna Mariah, CEO of WeSpeak, is taken by Chelsea’s tenacity and conviction to get her point across. She thinks what Chelsea is doing will help women all over the world find themselves on a big fashion billboard and feel included in the global fashion narrative.
Chelsea too wants to continue her work in both the world of modelling as well as gymnastics. She wants to inspire people to keep working towards things that people say they would never be able to do. It is a giant step towards inclusivity in the truest sense of the word.
We often give up our dreams because we think that we are not good enough.
Sometimes, we lose our motivation. But when faced with situations like these, we must remember Chelsea Werner and her undaunted spirit. She followed her passion and did what she had always wanted to do. Despite knowing that things will be difficult, she went on facing those difficulties. In the end, she emerged as a winner every single time! As of now, she wants to continue working as a model and a gymnast and push herself to become the best version of herself.
