Wives are always annoyed by their husbands’ long duration of sleep. Get this science fact: your wife is the one needing that extra bit of sleep, and not you.
Study unveils that women require at least 20 minutes more of peaceful bedtime than the average man. Men may find it hard to grasp. Neurologists though, believe that the complex, multi-tasking female brain needs a bit more rest to recharge.
Professor Jim Horne, the director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University has been researching and writing on this topic for over a decade. Jim, in his book, Sleepfaring: A Journey Through the Science of Sleep opines. “One of the major functions of sleep is to allow the brain to recover and repair itself.” He describes the neurological process of sleep in simple scientific terms. “During deep sleep, the cortex – the part of the brain responsible for thought memory, language and so on – disengages from the senses and goes into recovery mode.”
“The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need. Women tend to multi-task — they do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater. A man who has a complex job that involves a lot of decision-making. His lateral thinking may also need more sleep than the average male — though probably still not as much as a woman.”, he illustrates.
“This is because women’s brains are wired differently from men’s and are more complex, so their sleep need will be slightly greater. The average is 20 minutes more, but some women may need slightly more or less than this.”
Dear husband, it may be difficult to chew but I guess you are a man of reason. And now it’s all the more scientifically established that your wife’s brain is structurally more complex. And that’s precisely why she needs to dwell in the land of Nod for a longer period of time.
A survey examined the sleeping habits of 210 middle-aged men and women, and some interesting facts were brought to light. According to the survey, women suffer from serious health issues from sleep deprivation, as opposed to men.
“We found that for women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger. In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”
So, women, don’t get angry, hysteric, or hostile towards your partners. Instead, what you can do is, take a chill pill, and doze off for a few moments. See to it that the brain keeps functioning properly.
